Coraline Movie Notes

Opening scene:

  • Music - Starts quiet, intrumental, humming, repeatative lyrics (dreaming), sounds like childs music box, bit creepy.
  • Perspective - other mother, (P.O.V) - we see from her, know its her by the needle hands.
  • Use of close up shot - makes audience focus on the doll not on creator.
  • Lighting/Colour- Dim, dark, green, faded, - sets the mood / atmosphere. - That its old, abandoned, unappealing and rundown.
Setting - Pink palace - Real world
  • Music - happy, Gentle, Harmony, chanting, sung by children, / lyrics in a made up language, Makes calm happy atmosphere.
  • changes to increase tention, so the music gets faster and louder,  and more minor.
Coraline - sassy, moody, stubbon, Bright colour - blue hair, yellow jacket + boots, - Main character - makes us , focus, shoes shes different from those in the real world.

Colour/Lighting - dull, grey, boring, tinted, bland, dark, makes the 'real' house feel depressing, old, crusty + cold, not a place coraline wants to be.

Real Parents - dull, workaholics, dont have time for coraline, not happy, depressed, tired, exhausted, uncap-able. unhappy,

The ¨other¨ World:
Colour/Lighting Bright, vibrant, warm, welcoming - makes it feel inviting and safe, coraline doesn't stand up anymore

other parents - fun, active, show coraline attention, energetic, cooked her a nice meal, they look happy + healthy unlike the real parents.

Music - Spooky Music, doesn't match what we are seeing, slow to medium pace, minor, quiet

Pita Pocket

Today in cooking we made healthy food called pita pockets they were really good, in them there were lettuce/spinach, carrots, cheese, ham, and also tomato, and another thing onion. But you didnt have to put onion in them.

Vegetables-and-Dip Pita Pocket Recipe - NYT Cooking
here is a similar picture to what we had done in class today for cooking... they tasted real good and next time we would have to bring our phones so we could take some photos. Everyone worked in groups of 4. In my group I had Brayden and Jacob,  and next week jaz will be in my group.

Also after we had created/ put what we wanted in our pita pocket the teacher wrote down in scores from 1-3 of how good they were, the score i had got was a 3 cause it was really good the other people in my group got a 2 and a 3, She basically rates them of how we had cut them and after we had filled them up.... Mhmmmm Yummmm

Sustainbility Samesta 2

Today in Mr Carters class for sustainability/maths, For this blog post i will be writing what was most enjoyable about the classes I've had with him and what I've done, and also what i didn't like about what I've done and things. Here's a photo of the graphs/charts for A example:
For my first class I think it was we had to do some sort of chart like bar graph pie chart line chart and others similar to that... it was sort of fun at the time and we had to go around the class asking them out of the things we had written down which one they used the most or liked.

Also we had to do some games with dragon cards, it was fun as well after we got the hang of how to play. We were in groups of 2-4 with class mates, or just our friends. The card game was sort of challenging but it was also a good game to play.  Here's also a pic of what the dragon cards look like:
What i didn't like about it the first time i was playing it was, sometimes i got pissed off cause i didn't get it or either i got bored of it to. another thing i didn't like about it, was it was kinda something i didn't like to play even though it was the first time i had played dragon cards whatever its called.

The 3rd piece of work we did in class was called natural resources sustainability.
That's a picture of 2 work things we did for natural resources, the 2nd bit was a bit hard figuring out where the words match with the sentences on the opposite side. for one point we had to ( with whole class) we all had a choose to agree or disagree for a statement that was said by Mr Carter, including money and one other thing that i cannot remember what it is.
Part of the 4th bit we did for work was. We had watched 2 videos about sustainability issues around the world. After a we while these videos got boring for  me and also cause we had to sit down for ages I didn't like that and i needed to get up for a walk around and i felt figity like i wanted to move not stay still.
The next thing after that we did was paragraphing. We used these cards called 8 handy paragraphs/structure and another card called 12 ways to write a paragraph. It was helpful to help us write a paragraph. So after that we had to do our own paragraphs, for me it was a bit hard and i hated doing it, so i only got 2 paragraphs done and including the other one that we did with the teacher.

here is a link to my work, LINK

for the last thing we did was called area for maths, We started off on mathletics after Mr Carter was explaining some things to the class. It was quick fun doing mathletics for some reason i enjoy doing it.
So that's all I did so far (more next term)

Cooking - Lemon/vanilla cupcakes

Last week in cooking we made cupcakes that were flavoured lemon and also we added some vanilla essence in them, the people that were in my group are Ella, Kya, and also Toni and also including myself so it was a group of 4. and we got 3 each.  We worked together by all having our own jobs to do so that we were not doing nothing and everyone was kept busy,  but sometimes some people weren't doing anything and were just standing there cause our group wasn't that organised.

Here's my recipe for the lemon cupcakes i made

- 3C self-rising flour
1/2tsp salt
1C unsalted butter, at room temperature
2C White Sugar
4 eggs
1tsp vanilla essence
2Tbs of lemon zest
1C milk
2 1/2Tbs lemon juice

Icing:
150g butter
250g Icing Sugar
1tsp vanilla essence
2tsp hot water
Zest of 1 lemon

-This is a similar pictures of what we made
Zingy lemon cupcakes | BBC Good Food

This is what my parents thought about my product i made in cooking class
they thought it was alright but maybe a different flavour next time cause they dont really like lemon flavoured cupcakes they rather chocolate or strawberry something similar to that rather then lemon/vanilla. but their other all opinion was good they were thankful that i actually made them something to try for themselves.

My Opinion about the lemon/vanilla cupcakes is that they tasted very nice and I wish I could have more but I couldn't, and also I love the texture it had in them... and they were moist which I liked about them.

Also I dont think there is anything we need to change about it because we done it perfectly fine and we all also worked well together as a group of just girls...

How does 'Lighting & Colour' enhance the story?

Picture 1

Atmosphere - Feel, energy around
Mood - how you feel, emotions
Location - where something is happening.

Lighting -
- 1. natural -  produced in nature, often sun, moon stars, lightening,
- 2. Artificial - man-made light, usually electrical,

Warm - yellow, makes feel safe, warm
Cold -  white/blue tone, makes feel clean, clinical

Bright - Fills room, makes feel happier, safe,
Dull  - fills part of a space only, often creepy/murky

Colour Pallete:
Predominant colours used in the scene.

brainstorm: colour/lighting
What happening ----------> Coraline + her parents having breakfast in the real kitchen - they look
depressed, dull, lifeless

Techniques: lighting - cold,
natural - from cloudy window
dull

colour: - cold
dark, washed out, faded, muted.
- off whites, creams, + yellows.

Effect on viewer - Feels boring, dont want to be there, feel/think - boring dull lifeless,
 - set the mood that real world is boring + empty - makes the other world more appealing.
(theme) - looks can be deceiving - is not actually bad place to be.

Other Techniques - Costume - real parents in simple plain colours + fabrics in dull colours.
Costume/shots/music/setting:

Picture 2

brainstorm: Colour/Lighting
what happening: coraline + other parents having dinner in the other kitchen

- good food on offer,

Techniques: Lighting - Artificial - Ceiling light bulb
- Warm - yellowish tone
- Dull - parts of the room still in shadow

Colour - yellows/oranges/black Palette
- warm - makes us feel safe/Comfortable.

Effect on viewer - happy want to be there,
(feel/think) welcoming, colourful, joyful,

Director purpose - looks can be deceiving, - looks nice but in reality it is unsafe.
theme: - Makes Coraline feel comfortable. huge improvement
- On real world

Other techniques -  Costume - Colourful, friendly, looking,  lots of black/red,
- more fashionable, more warm, comfy,
costume/shots/music/setting

Paragraph: 1,,, In the real kitchen scene, colour and lighting were used effectively. Also the real world is sort of boring, and makes you feel like you dont want to be there. The type of shot that was taken is sort of like a medium shot. The colour in the real world is darkened, and also shadowy. Looks like she is staring into a creepy cats eye.  As Coraline stares or talks to the cat, there's sort of a feeling that something else is going. So it is sort of Spooky looking and a spooky as feeling for the audience.

Paragraph 2:
In the "Other World" when Coraline first arrives there, She thinks its All nice, and stuff. This angle shot is sort of a long distant. The lighting is also sort of dullish. Coraline's room is sort of dark but has a nice design to it. For me being part of the audience i would think that would be a better room for a kid then what is in the "Real World" With the "Real Mother". The other mother acts all nice and each time Coraline goes back there she starts changing like 10 percent each time then it goes to 30 percent change, and then 50 then 100 and then after all she turns all mean all of a sudden. Into herself that coraline would never have thought of.

Arthritis Research

Cause of Arthritis

  • A reduction in the normal amount of this cartilage tissue cause some forms of arthritis. Normal wear and tear causes OA, one of the most common forms of arthritis. An infection or injury to the joints can exacerbate this natural breakdown of cartilage tissue...

Heart Dissection

Last time in science we were learning how to dissect a pig heart and learn about all the parts of the heart and also learning how we would cut it in different sorts of ways...

Here is 1 photo of it cut open and what colours it is and also what the inside of it looks like...

So that's what the inside of this pig heart looks like. That's it been cut in half...

We dissected hearts because we were learning about them before we dissected and we wanted to know the parts of a heart...
These are the parts of a heart below:
Heart Chambers, Valves, Vessels, Wall and Conduction System. The heart is made up of four chambers. The upper two chambers are called atria (singular: atrium) and the lower two are known as ventricles (singular: ventricle). Muscular walls, called septa or septum, divide the heart into two sides.

Well we did this dissection it was quit fun and i actually to be honest liked doing it... but at first i didn't really wanna do it but once i tried i liked doing it...

Linking themes to the impact of angle, movement and shots

Brainstorm:

  • High Angle - Makes the character ' other wybie ' look small, weak and vulnerable.
  • POV - Other mother - Dominant and powerful.
  • Medium Shot - Gives us some idea of the background but not full.
  • Audience  feels - powerful, we are looking down on Wybie through other mothers POV. - Sad/worried for wybie
- he looks small, sad, innocent.
- first character in other world to suggest something isn't right.

  • Directors Purpose - makes us feel sorry for Wybie.
- Makes audience think that maybe the other mother isn't so nice - foreshadowing.

Dutch tilt - dolls point of view.
Paragraph:
In the shot with the other Wybie and the other mother, high  angle shots are used effectively to show the theme ' Looks can be deceiving'. This is demonstrated through a high angle shot from the point of view of the other mother. She is looking down the front porch steps at a scared other Wybie. This makes the audience feel sorry for Wybie and makes the Other Mother seem powerful. The purpose of this scene was to make the audience think that maybe the other mother isn't so nice after all. Combined with the use of lighting, Wybie is in a warm light but surrounded by darkness, the director has created atmosphere of caution- something is not right. This reminds the viewer of a later scene where Coraline is looking up at the other mother in horror as she throws her through a magical portal into a locked room. This shows that looks can be deceiving, because the other mother wasn't nice like Coraline first thought...

The camera angle is called a dutch tilt, is achieved by tilting the camera so the horizon is not level. Used Judiciously, it can provide an unusual or dramatic perspective. In the shot Coraline is sort of crouching down.

workshop 1 unpacking things and ideas

theme/idea - something that links throughout the story

"looks can be deceiving"
- things aren't always what they seem

EXAMPLE 1 = the beldam / other mother
- she starts off good and then ends up evil / soul eater / metal spider demon
- shows theme because the other mother changes over time without the audience and Coraline not noticing
- important to the story because it helps the audience understand Coralines choice when she realises that having everything perfect won't make her happy.

EXAMPLE 2 = other world vs the real world
the other world is a perfect web / trap to catch coraline whereas the real world is boring but safe
- shows theme because even though the other world seems better in every way, the real world is actually better / safer because it isn't a trap.
- important for her audience to understand why coraline goes back into the real world.

Statement - in coraline, themes and ideas are used effectively

Evidence - for instance, "looks can be deceiving" is shown through the character of the 'Other Mother" the other mother starts out nice but is revealed to be a soul devouring demon.

eXplanation - this makes the audience feel that we shouldnt trust things or people that seem perfect at first glance

eXplanation - this was done to make us feel weary or develop a sence of caution towards a new situation

eXplanation - coinciding with this is the use of colour to show the "other mother" is becoming more evil, at the start she is surrended by warm colours that makes  us feel safe but by the end it is dark with neon green.

your link - this theme is also shown through the changes in the other world as it is revealed to be a spider web design to catch coraline
